According to the WHO (2023), health equity is achieved when everyone can attain their full potential for health and well-being. Social determinants of health are the circumstances in which people are born, grow up, live, work and age, and the systems put in place to deal with illness. These circumstances are in turn shaped by a wider set of forces: economics, social policies, and politics.

In contrast, health inequities are avoidable inequalities in health between groups of people within countries and between countries (WHO, 2023). These inequities are preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, violence, or opportunities to achieve optimal health experienced by populations disadvantaged by their social or economic status, geographic location, and environment (CDC, 2023).

The APRU Global Health Conference 2023, aims to facilitate inter-sectoral exchanges of world-class expertise and dissemination of cutting-edge research on equity in health. Key themes include the analysis of the intersection of equity in health systems and access to surgical services, the consequences of health disparities related to migration, and the effects of inequality on the health of indigenous populations. We convene experts from around the world with the ultimate goal of devising possible actions to achieve equity in health.
